Unfortunately, the area the dog likes to hang out is literally 10 feet from my bedroom window. The Bark Off is supposed to work at a decent distance so theoretically I could place the unit by my bed and flip it on at night. If it’s successful, then the dog will either stay quiet or move somewhere else and my problem will be solved.
Hopefully, this little invention will put an end to the annoying yapping of our little friends but in my opinion the jury is still out. It’s tough to imagine that a simple little contraption like this could be the answer but sometimes the solutions to some of our biggest problems are really easy.

Why Do Dogs Pant?

Dogs don’t sweat like we do. Sweating is an important mechanism that allows humans to fight the heat. By sweating, excess heat is released from the body when the moisture on the surface of the skin evaporates. Our furry friends cannot manage excess body heat this way. It is widely believed that dogs don’t sweat. It is commonly believed that because of the fur, dogs cannot sweat. You may have had dogs for years but it is highly probable that you have not seen one sweating. Dogs have very few sweat glands and these sweat glands are mostly located at the pads on their feet. This means that dogs can sweat. During hot days the floor will be marked by the dog’s paws dampened with sweat.
How do dogs manage the heat? Panting like barking is a dog thing. Panting is a dog’s effective technique of coping with the heat and ensuring that cooler blood will be circulated to all parts of the body and to prevent the brain, the most heat sensitive part from being affected by excessive heat. A dog that pants needs very little energy. When the dog lolls the tongue, the cooling system switch will be turned on and excess body heat will be gone. A dog’s tongue is one important tool in regulating body temperature.
Because of the location of the very few sweat glands, a dog cannot cool the body if it is running on hot pavement. Cooling off is achieved through the tongue. The evaporation of moisture on the surface of the tongue is enhanced when the dog lolls the tongue. The tongue, the mouth and consequently the blood vessels on the head are cooled when the dogs pants. Once blood is cooled by the dog’s panting the normal level of body temperature will be attained.
Dogs pant for other reasons. Hot weather causes dogs to pant excessively. Excitement, stress or exhaustion from a strenuous activity will make a dog pant. The physical structures of short faced dogs requires them to pant excessively. Medical concerns like seizures, lung and heart disease would cause a dog to pant.
As mentioned, panting is normal in dogs but a pet parent has to be vigilant. Panting is one of the symptoms of heatstroke. Dogs cannot cope well with high temperatures. Left inside a car, a dog would pant heavily further heating up the confined space. Heatstroke is a common killer of dogs.
